Lee plans to write an article on the Michigan Land & Iron Company, an enterprise that owned about 400,000 acres in the Upper Peninsula. Since some of the firm's records were housed at Michigan Technological University, a visit to the school's archives was required. However, there was little time available for such a journey. That's why we ended up devoting one day on the road driving there, one day doing research, and one day driving back home. Thus, two-thirds of this "vacation" was spent behind the wheel of our Honda.

Pictured here is a meadow we stopped at along the way, awash with wild flowers and insects.
Of course, to get to the UP, one normally crosses the Straits via the beautiful Mackinac Bridge, certainly one of the most photographed structures in Michigan. It is very photogenic, and the challenge is to capture it in ways that are not the usual views.

Because of the difference in lighting, going in the two directions of the passageway gives different looks to the bridge.

The open sun-roof of our Honda allowed Dot to look up with her iPhone camera.
Although that was the longest trip we had this year, we did get on the road for several different excursions to Pentwater, Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor, Saginaw, and Detroit for Lee's research and Dot's orchid shows. These sky photos are from these drives.
