Back Yard Goings On

Critters

We had several geese families make their home on the bank of the Looking Glass River, and our little pond. Pictured here are 3 of the families mowing and fertilizing our grass.

We don't mind them being in the area beyond the light post, but do not welcome them coming up the bank toward the house and Dot's perennial beds.

It seems every year our trees have outgrown their space, or need a haircut -- or are just plain dying, as is the case with the maple trees in our front yard. We had to take one down this Summer, and another one will have to go next year. We hate to see them go, but they are diseased and dying with some kind of fungus that we don't want spreading to other trees.

We've had our usual share of wildlife this year. The monster (Snapping Turtle) from the pond came up to the house, passed by the car and flower beds and was looking for a place to lay her eggs. She wanted to cross the road, but our neighbor thought she might get crushed by a passing car, so he turned her back to the pond. All the while, our cats watched carefully -- from a distance.

Dot was photo-graphing the morning fog, when a young buck photo-bombed the scene.

Tree frogs galore this year!

Dot found this tiny tree frog squeezed between the glass and a screen in her greenhouse in the dead of Winter. She placed in on a plant, hoping it would find enough food to survive until Spring. It did survive, and finally sang it's "set me free" song this Fall.

What does it mean when the middle stripe of a wholly bear caterpillar is so much bigger than the others ? ? ?
